Food Security and Economic Development

In February 2010 EFA signed a contract with Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH) to finalise our partnership for the FoSED project. This project aims to create food security for the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the Bo, Pujehun and Kenema districts (3).

EFA and WHH are aiming to decrease rural poverty and achieve the transition from relief to sustainable development in the coming 5 years. Sustainable farming systems will be developed and ‘best agricultural practices’ will be promoted. Market opportunities for agricultural products will also be promoted and rural households will be empowered to make use of these markets. Local institutions will be strengthened to promote the economic development process.

Although the project will be implemented in partnership with WHH, EFA will take full responsibility for introducing mechanisms for the sustainable management of natural resource through environmental education and awareness raising (EE and EAR), exploring the market opportunities for Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP)and EFA will identify possible eco-tourism locations and develop and implement an eco-tourism strategy plan.

This project is fully led and executed from our Bo office, to which EFA head office has delegated several members of staff. The information unit (head office) will work in close cooperation with the education team to create relevant materials for the FoSED Environmental Awareness Raising project and Environmental Education.
