EFA has a 15-year history and expertise in the following areas::
Protected Area Management, including:
The conservation of Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. EFA led the establishment of the Tiwai Island Administrative Committee (TIAC), which has representatives from various Tiwai stakeholders, most importantly the community leaders. Tiwai is managed by TIAC and has developed into a successful community based ecotourism initiative as well as a popular research destination and marks the effectiveness of EFA’s intervention in the conservation of Tiwai Island.
Raising awareness and training and education on environmental issues in communities and schools, including: Workshops – community environmental action groups – nature clubs in schools – producing videos for awareness raising, training and education – mass media awareness raising (television and radio), practical training for communities in eco-stove production, tree nurseries and woodlots – training of trainers in the above – teacher training in environmental issues.
Forestry and agro-forestry, including:Community tree nurseries – community wood-lots for fuelwood, cash crops, and agroforestry systems – training and materials for unpaid community tree planting and management
Energy conservation, renewable energy, including: Solar panel installations in communities (schools, hospitals) – reduction of fuelwood use – ecostove production
Community development, including: Working with displaced and local communities on local environmental issues – mobilising communities without paid incentives to conserve and repair their environment – setting up local environmental action groups
Project management, in particular participatory processes of: Needs assessment and project identification – project design – monitoring and evaluation
Refugees, post conflict, and environment:Projects to reduce impacts of refugees on the local environment – raising refugees’ awareness of environmental issues and practical training – reintegration of returning refugees and local communities – environmental awareness in reconstruction
Conservation and rehabilitation, including:Rehabilitation of mined areas – rehabilitation of deforested areas – community work in conservation areas
Income generation and the environment, including: Participative design of community-based eco-tourism projects – skills training in production of cash crops (oil palm, cacao, etc) – skills training in production of eco-stoves for income generation
Environmental consultancies for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)
